Railway to The Top of Europe on Jungfrau Mountain
Blog: Living the Dream: RTW - 14 April 2012
When thinking of Switzerland, an image of the snow-capped mountains are always the first thing to pop in a traveler's mind. The majestic mountains of the Alps are littered throughout this tiny country, and is often the number one exploration choice for all those who vi

Navigating Skiing in Davos-Klosters with Kids
Blog: Ciao Bambino! - 26 March 2012
When many people hear the name Davos, the first thing they think of is the World Economic Forum, while Klosters evokes thoughts of Prince Charles and his annual ski trip. That’s all I knew before last week ... The full story is that Davos Klosters is a multi-faceted mountain resort (one of the oldest in Switzerland) in the heart of the Swiss Alps with 700+ km of hiking trails in the summer and 300+ km of ski slopes in the winter. We spent a weekend here this month and got a first-hand look at all it has to offer for my Skiing in Europe with Kids’ series.

Navigating Crans-Montana with Kids
Blog: Ciao Bambino! - 12 March 2012
My skiing in Europe with kids’ series continues this week with a review of Crans-Montana resort in the Valais region of the Swiss Alps. Those who know about the adjacent ski resorts of Crans and Montana — known together as Crans-Montana — rave about the holiday experience. It’s not a well-recognized international Swiss ski brand like Zermatt or Verbier. Despite this fact, Crans-Montana is not a second-tier ski destination. The opposite is true as the combined resorts have 140 km of skiing available ...

21 Walking on the Tour de Mont Blanc – Podcast
Blog: Heather on her travels - 11 March 2012
In Travel Podcast 21 I’m walking the Tour de Mont Blanc with my friend Julia. The TMB, as it’s known, is a long distance mountain trail that takes a circular route through France, Switzerland and Italy, but rather than take 12 days to walk the whole thing we decided to walk it a few days [...]

Navigating Skiing in Verbier with Kids
Blog: Ciao Bambino! - 5 March 2012
Verbier is one of the most famous ski resorts in Switzerland. It’s not particularly well known as a kid-friendly mecca, but plenty of families choose to ski and vacation here to experience the tremendous on and off-piste ski terrain. This post is part of my navigating European ski resorts with kids’ series. We’re taking advantage of the terrific conditions this season to hit a variety of resorts. So far, I’ve covered Grindelwald and Zermatt in depth; each of these resorts has its own distinct resort personality.

Navigating Skiing in Zermatt with Kids
Blog: Ciao Bambino! - 7 February 2012
If you’re dreaming of an incredible Swiss ski experience, Zermatt, home of the Matterhorn, delivers. Insane mountain scenery paired with an old-style European village transport visitors to a winter paradise. Winter and summer months alike, I always urge friends and family enjoying Swiss vacations to experience Zermatt, at least for a night or two. Located just a few hours via car or train from both Geneva and Zurich, Zermatt is surprisingly easy to access given the remote location.

Navigating Skiing in Grindelwald with Kids
Blog: Ciao Bambino! - 25 January 2012
Navigating a ski resort in Europe is not an intuitive experience. Many of the resort areas are vast and comprised of multiple ski areas within a single destination. Language barriers create additional complexity. Last week's Photo Friday post featured Grindelwald in the Jungfrau Region of Switzerland. Grindelwald is a stunning winter destination and the ultimate Swiss Alps ski experience. Due diligence, however, is required to ensure you experience more pleasure than pain. It's worth it!

Skiing Mountains Not Runs in Switzerland for Photo Friday
Blog: Ciao Bambino! - 20 January 2012
When you ski in the Alps, you're skiing mountains not runs. The sense of open space is incredible and one of the things that makes skiing in Switzerland so epic. Here's a shot of our 9-year-old Devon skiing in Grindelwald, Switzerland last weekend. Believe it or not, this was taken on a bluebird Saturday, i.e. where are the other people?

Put a fork in it!
Blog: Chickstravelflicks - 25 December 2011
Tweet After almost 10 years in Switzerland, I finally saw Vevey’s famous fork, positioned across from the Charlie Chaplin statue on the lake front! There has been much controversy around this fork, which at 8 meters in height and 1.3 meters in width, is made entirely from stainless steel. The fork was designed by Jean-Pierre … Continue reading »

This post is part of a new series entitled ‘Picture Perfect’, published because of my wish to highlight some beautiful travel shots from around the world which didn’t quite make it into regular blog posts or which tell a story on their own and need few words, if any, to describe them. Today, as I [...]

10 Things to do in and around Zurich: Go gaga over sweet treats.
Blog: The Art of Slow Travel - 3 December 2011
5) Go gaga over sweet treats Warning: This post is filled with delicious things which will make your cry 1) because they are amazingly delicious 2) because they are oh-my-god expensive, but it would be madness to visit Zurich and not stuff your face with sweets. Take dessert over dinner if you have to. Food [...]

Exploring metros
Blog: Snaps and Flip Flops - 18 November 2011
I think one way of getting a know a city is by taking the public transport. It kinda lets you sneak a peek at how locals go about their daily lives. While I personally love walking to get to places when i'm in a foreign city, I must say I'm also fascinated by the train stations and the people in it.

Closter Einsiedeln, Switzerland: Pictures take you places
Blog: The Art of Slow Travel - 31 October 2011
I loathe guidebooks about Switzerland with every inch of myself. Every view is ‘breath-taking’, every town or village has a ‘cobbled old town’ and ‘medieval buildings’. I hate them because they make Switzerland sound all the same, and incredibly boring at that. The subtleties of the Swiss landscape and towns can only be captured on [...]

Hiking up Grosser Mythen, a.k.a the day I almost died (with embarrassment)
Blog: The Art of Slow Travel - 24 October 2011
‘Didn’t you say that a lot of people die on Swiss mountains every year?’ I squeal, like a tiny scared mouse. ‘Yes,’ Boyfriend answers. ‘But not on mountains like this!’ He exclaims, trying to hide his embarrassment as fellow mountain hikers stare and point at me as I struggle down the side of Grosser Mythen. [...]

10 things to do in Zurich: Visit the museums, and not just on rainy days
Blog: The Art of Slow Travel - 17 October 2011
4. Visit the museums, and not just on rainy days. I must admit that I am extremely picky when it comes to museum and art galleries, especially when they aren’t free and I know that stepping into them will involve some sort of financial commitment, i.e. one dessert less from my travel budget. In other [...]

Are you starting to think about your summer vacation? Then you have to check out our French Alps Tours. This year it will take place again in June. Lady in Zurich
Blog: A Lady in London - 11 October 2011
Zurich was more beautiful than I remembered. My last visit was eight years ago, and while I loved the city, I somehow came away with memories of a cold, austere place full of big banks. But when I traveled back to Zurich on my way to Liechtenstein last week I had the chance to correct [...]
