Schaulager
A kind of art bunker, Schaulager was designed by Herzog & de Meuron. The sharply cornered, mostly white gallery is partly rendered in earth dug out from around the foundations. A huge video screen on the front facade gives you a foretaste of the rolling temporary exhibitions inside. Catch tram 11 from Barfüsserplatz or Marktplatz.

Bourbaki Panorama
Edouard Castres’ painstakingly detailed depiction of the Franco–Prussian War of 1870–71, a 1100-sq-metre circular painting of miserable-looking troops and civilians, is brought to life by a moving narrative (also in English). Recent renovations have provided retail space, cinemas, a library and a good-sized cafe-bar.
