Historisches Museum Basel information
One of the most wide-ranging collections in the city, the offerings at the Basel History Museum include pre–Christian-era archaeological finds, a trove of religious objects from the cathedral and plenty of material documenting the city’s development. Centuries of applied arts, ceramics, weaponry and much more are housed in the former Barfüsserkirche (the Barefooted Ones Church, after the barefoot Franciscan friars who founded it in the 14th century). Highlights include the fine 16th-century choir stall and 15th-century tapestries depicting the dance of death.
Further collections are spread across three other sites. The Musikmuseum contains a veritable orchestra of instruments. The star item of the Haus zum Kirschgarten is a collection of fine Meissen porcelain. Admission to each is the same as for the main museum, or you can purchase a combined ticket for Sfr14 for all three.
The Kutschenmuseum houses 19th- and 20th- century carriages, sleighs and dog carts.
