The precious heart of this sumptuous 18th-century mansion with vast rolling green park and the best-ever Lake-Geneva view is its restaurant. But fortunately for wealthy guests there are a handful of lovely rooms tucked up top. Book as far ahead as you can.

Built as a private summer residence, its culinary prowess on the Geneva dining scene took root in 1900. The City of Geneva bought the place in 1931 and it has not looked back since the 60s when gastronomic creations cooked up by talented chefs really got tongues wagging; they still do. Guest rooms are five-star - an artful mix of period furnishings and modern gadgets. It should be forbidden to stay a night here without enjoying a pre-breakfast stroll in the beautiful lakeside city park, Parc des Eaux-Vives.
