Club Q
In a car park, this club is for those who take their dancing – to house, hip hop and R&B – more seriously than seeing and being seen. It’s at the back of the car park, on Mühleweg. Although its Ibiza nights don’t quite match the Spanish rave island’s megaclub vibe, Zürich’s club crowd see it as the next best thing. Also in the car park is Club Q’s minor cousin, the smaller club BBQ.

MAD - Moulin à Danse
With five floors of entertainment, MAD really is a crazy sort of place. Music themes can range from anything to trance to tranquil. Just behind it on Rue de Genève is Zapoff Galleries, a slick designer bar run by the same people. Snappy dressing is required and people under 25 don’t get past the doorman – at least that’s the policy.

D-Club
D-Club is a heaving club where local and guest DJs spin funk to house, especially the latter, in all its latest sub-forms. Friday night is electro night and Saturday the place shakes to humping house. To get here take the stairs down from Rue du Grand Pont and turn right before descending all the way into Place Centrale.

Amnésia
This place packs them in down on the lake. Apart from the club proper (with four dance floors) you can limber up in one of three attached bars beforehand and, in summer, get a snack in the restaurant on the beach (both open to 2am, May to October).

Mascotte
The old variety hall ‘Corso’ is now a popular club with huge windows facing Sechseläutenplatz and the lake. It’s renowned for Tuesday’s Karaoke from Hell, where punters sing punk or metal songs accompanied by a live band.

Loft Electroclub
Loft, a predominantly red bar and dance space just one level down the stairs of the Tour Bel-Air building, is a popular late-night option. DJs occasionally put on R & B nights, while Saturday is electro night.

Kaufleuten
An opulent art-deco theatre with a stage, mezzanine floor and bars arranged around the dance floor, Zürich’s ‘establishment’ club plays house, hip hop and Latin rhythms to a slightly older crowd.

Paradox
Paradox is a trio of trendy, steely spaces: À l’Étage (1st-floor bar), Para (club with entrance at Rue des Terreaux 7) and Dox (entrance at Rue de Chavannes 19).

L'Atelier Volant
This venue is gaily painted and hard to miss. Salsa is a big theme on the 1st floor, but there are more mainstream hits on the ground floor and reggae on the 2nd floor.

Die Kuppel
This is an atmospheric wooden dome, with a dance floor and cocktail bar, located in a secluded park. Salsa, soul, house and ’70s/’80s are regularly on the bill.

Bierhübeli
This huge old hall with a balcony hosts mainstream international bands and club nights. Its chic DJ lounge throbs most nights – as does its summer beer garden.

Desperados
This late-night disco bar is hot, cramped and sweaty - in other words the perfect nightclub. The entrance is on a tiny square off Vicolo Orfanotrofio.

Mad Max
Huge club playing everything from rock to trance and house, and enforcing a strange door policy - nobody under 28 (or 26 for women) is allowed in.
