Tucked away beneath Norrbro, the bridge that links Gamla Stan to Helgeandsholmen and Norrmalm, this child-friendly museum has recently been renovated. It was initially established when construction workers preparing to build a car park here in the late 1970s unearthed foundations dating from the 1530s. The ancient walls were preserved as found and, instead of a parking lot, a museum was built around them. The museum’s circular plan leads visitors through faithful reconstructions of typical homes, markets and workshops from medieval Stockholm, with plenty of hands-on and multimedia elements to keep the yawns at bay. Also in the museum is the well-preserved 1520s-era ship Riddarsholm .
