Lonely Planet review
With its dramatic iron spire stabbing at the sky, Riddarholmskyrkan (on Riddarholmen) is a Stockholm icon. Built by Franciscan monks in the late 13th century and expanded in the mid-15th century, it has been the final resting place of Swedish monarchs since the burial of the mighty Gustav II Adolf in 1632, whose marble sarcophagus lies in the Gustavian chapel.
The church became the royal resting place after the burial of Magnus Ladulås on the site in 1290. It is home to the armorial glory of the Serafim knightly order.
On the right of the main altar is the Gustavian chapel, with the marble sarcophagus of Sweden's mightiest monarch. Directly opposite is the Carolean chapel, with the black marble sarcophagus of Karl XII. Also look for the massed wall-plates displaying the arms of the knights.
