The inventive menu at this elegant Eastern hotspot includes crispy rösti crab and prawn cakes (Skr95) and the delicate drunken Szechuan duck with tamarind-chilli glaze (Skr237). It’s all sublime and complemented by discreet, near-perfect service.

Mathias Dahlgren
Chef Matthias Dahlgren is hot property and his namesake newcomer has foodies in a flutter. Set in the Grand Hôtel, it’s divided into three spaces: a luxe bar, Matbaren (Food Bar) for casual noshing, and the more formal Matsalen (Dining Room). The latter is where Dahlgren really delivers his tour de force: think organic foie gras terrine with mango, black sesame and black pepper, or fried apple with goat’s milk ice-cream, vanilla cream and rye bread, bowling over the critics. Republik
Republik’s trés urbane bar was voted Stockholm’s best in 2006 (try a Gasper cocktail and you’ll see why), yet the ultimate indulgence here is the restaurant, where the vibe is suave, the staff clued-up and the French-influenced food scandalously good (the seared scallops with truffle risoni, jamón Serrano, romanesco and fennel dill will leave you with a post-dinner glow).

Esperanto
Hailed as the new Bon Lloc (a now-defunct restaurant renowned for its avant-garde cooking), award-winning Esperanto offers a five- or seven-course menu only (Skr855/995). While the servings are notoriously petite, creations like duck challandaise with blood orange curd and breadcréme served with liquorice and tangerine will leave you gratified. A culinary event; book weeks in advance.

The three very cool French chefs in the kitchen don’t simply whip up to-die-for French-Italian dishes, they’ll probably deliver them to your table, talk you through the produce and guide you through the wine list. It’s never short of a convivial crowd, so it’s best to book, especially when jazz musicians drop in for a soulful evening jam.

It was East that snapped Stockholm out of its lemon-chicken fixation. Years on, this eternally hip resto-bar still pulls in the punters for perfect Asian grub in Scandi-Jap surrounds. While the bar skills are patchy, the chefs, DJs and swimming piranhas will keep you snapping those chopsticks happily.
