    Arguably Göteborg’s coolest hang-out (think grit-chic interiors, local art exhibitions, DJ-spun tunes and creative indie crowds), this cafe-bar hybrid also serves brilliant, great-value grub like goat’s cheese–stuffed aubergines with red pesto potatoes. The well-priced house wine is perfectly drinkable and there’s a backyard courtyard for fine-weather lounging.

    Trädgår'n

    This cool and spacious restaurant, bar and nightclub (until 05:00 Friday and Saturday) has a summer terrace backing onto the lovely Trädgårdsföreningen park. Lunch here is a treat, with salads, hotplate dishes and four-course meal deals, depending on how hungry you are. In the evening, the restaurant's award-winning chefs rustle up excellent fish and seafood buffets.

    Wedged between the tourist office and Louis de Geer Konserthus, this trendy warehouse bistro serves crossover grub like asparagus risotto with orange-marinated fennel, carrot salad and grilled bread. It turns into a nightclub on Friday and Saturday, with two dance floors serving up R&B, old-school rock and Schlager to revellers 25 years and over.

    Serious foodies and night owls swear by this stylish basement bolt hole, serving fabulous hot nosh until midnight, and cheese and antipasto platters until closing. Staff are passionate about the finely tuned food, which spans Swedish and Spanish flavours (think Kalix caviar on toasted brioche or Spanish blood sausage with tomato bread).

Done, order a pineapple mojito and flirt to a bossa nova beat at the bar.

    Stylish, award-winning 28+ is another fine-dining darling, wowing palates with intriguing dishes like duck terrine with fresh berries, roasted brioche and sweet-and-sour strawberries. For the ultimate indulgence, succumb to the seven-course degustation menu (Skr975). The restaurant closes in summer.

    Housed in a recently converted 19th-century snus (snuff) factory, urbane Fiskmagasinet combines an intimate bar with a casually chic dining room serving savvy seafood dishes like grilled scampi with mashed potato, truffle and port wine reduction, as well as cheaper Swedish classics.

    In a 200-year-old warehouse down near the Kinda Canal docks, this elegant award-winner fuses classic Swedish cuisine with continental influences – think glazed duck breast with almond potato puree and artichoke ragout in a wine balsamic sauce. The lunch buffet is good value.

    It might lack Saluhallen’s size and buzz, but this covered market (in an old fire-station) will have you drooling over its bounty of fresh bread, cheeses, quiches, seafood and ethnic treats. It’s particularly handy for the hostel district.
