If you’re tall then it won’t have taken you long to realise that Sri Lankan beds aren’t built with you in mind.
Set well back from the hustle of the beach, this is Unawatuna at its most chic. An exquisite Italian-owned house with four intimate and impeccable rooms that have been restored and decorated in a Rome-meets-the-tropics fusion.
This new place has vanilla-coloured white rooms with flashy photos on the walls and modern metal furnishings. The rooms all share a pretty mosaic-patterned bathroom, while the apartment has its own kitchenette, bathroom and living room.
A lovely waterfront hotel built in a traditional but very tall style. The twirling wooden window slats have an Arabic feel and the interior of the rooms are attired in Indian art and ancient furnishings, while the bathroom is utterly modern.

Located away from the beach, there is nothing remotely black about this guest house nor anything horsey, but there is plenty of beauty.
The basic concrete cubicles inside this rambling old house, with its equally rambling garden, might not look too pretty, but it’s cheap and just a few sandy paces from the beach.
The number of bronzing backpackers lounging around here indicate that this is a popular choice – and with good reason.
