  1. Photo Essay: Day Trip to Galle, Sri Lanka

    Blog: GoBackpacking - 28 March 2012

alle, located South of Colombo, was once the most powerful and most influential port on the island of Sri Lanka. The city has a fascinating history. Long ago Galle was known as Tarshish, the city where ancient King Solomon obtained some of his exotic supplies. Many years later, the Portuguese landed in Galle and transformed the city [...]

  3. Lady Wishes You a Happy 2012

    Blog: A Lady in London - 3 January 2012

Happy New Year! I spent New Year’s Eve in London this year and rang in 2012 with friends in the UK. Last year I was traveling in Sri Lanka over New Year’s. I took a few video clips of the beaches in Galle, the cultural capital of Kandy, the hill city of Hatton, the lush [...]

  4. Lady in Galle

    Blog: A Lady in London - 14 January 2011

I love train travel. I never traveled by train growing up, and despite taking trains all over Europe since moving to London, it’s still a novelty to me. When I booked my trip to Sri Lanka, I planned to take the trains as much as possible. Unfortunately, my itinerary and the train schedules didn’t allow [...]

  5. Two Monks: Travel Photo Contest Friday 7

    Blog: Todd's Wanderings - 28 May 2010

Update: The winner is Dave! The picture is from Galle, Sri Lanka along the old Portuguese fort walls. Dave has decided to highlight UMCOR, the United Methodist Committee on Relief. I worked with UMCOR in Sri Lanka and I can confirm that they do good work. Galle is a wonderful place to walk around and experience Sri Lanka’s colonial architecture. Interestingly enough the fort is mostly occupied by Muslims who have business ranging from antique dealers to gem and jewelry shops. Each year the city hosts a book fair  as well as the Galle Art Festival.

  6. Will you sponsor me to come to Australia?

    Blog: Backpackular Spectacular - 7 February 2010

For me, the 2004 tsunami was largely synonymous with Thailand, largely because that was where the most Australians and other foreigners were killed. But Sri Lanka saw more than its fair share of desolation, with upwards of 30 thousand lives lost around the south coast. Galle, around three hours south of Colombo with a population [...]

  8. River House and the Galle Art Trail

    Blog: Todd's Wanderings - 18 January 2009

It has been a busy few months and I have not posted to Todd’s Wanderings in some time. The following few posts will help close out my experiences in 2008 before I turn my attention to the new year. In September, Kay and I took a weekend trip down to the secluded boutique hotel the River House just south of Bentota. In October, we headed down to Galle for the city’s annual Art Festival in the old Portuguese and Dutch era fort section of town. The common room of the main house overlooks the river and invites nature inside.

  9. Galle: Old Fort City by the Beach

    Blog: Todd's Wanderings - 25 August 2008

In early July I took a trip down to the southern cost of Sri Lanka to the old fort city Galle and the surrounding beach areas. It is easy to forget how beautiful the Sri Lankan coast line is when you live in Colombo and are surrounded by endless cars all fighting to impose their own individual traffic rules on you. Just a 3 hour drive south of the city and you are greeted by empty tropical beaches, cocktails at sunset, and windy walks along the old fort walls of Galle. During the monsoon season the sea is predictable only in is inconsistency and dangerous rip tides.
