There are banks and ATMs all over the city, and several 24-hour bank branches in the arrivals hall at the Bandaranaike International Airport.

There are several moneychangers in Fort; their offices are concentrated in and around Chatham St and Mudalige Mawatha. Their cash-only rates are a little higher than you would get in a bank. You can change cash or travellers cheques at reduced rates in the main hotels.

NationsTrust Bank/American Express (441 4141; 104 Dharmapala Mawatha, Col 7) sells travellers cheques.
