    Blog: Scouting NY - 15 June 2009

I was driving down Bedford Ave around the Crown Heights area in Brooklyn when I passed this great neo-Gothic building at Sterling Place…and noticed something that made me stop and get out to take pictures. Right at the top center of the curve is this emblem: Crazy, right? Apparently, this was once an auto showroom for Studebaker [...]

Blog: Kiva Stories from the Field - 1 June 2009

By Zev Lowe, KF 8 Indonesia The US dollar has recently risen significantly against many currencies. When I arrived in Bali to begin my Kiva Fellowship with DINARI Foundation, I received 10,295 Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) for each of my US dollars. This is 10% higher than a year ago, when the US dollar was worth 9,350 [...]

  12. Cafe Viena, Barcelona (sometimes tourists are right)

Blog: An American in London - 14 May 2009

When Jon and I arrived in Barcelona, we arrived hungry. Because it still was too early in the day for a real meal, when we read this April 2009 New York Times description of Cafe Viena as serving “a perfect snack,” we thought we’d give the place a try. So we asked our B&B owner [...]

  13. Bar Mut, Barcelona

Blog: An American in London - 11 May 2009

Although I’ve always read that Barcelona is no tapas town (this article, for example, explains how Catalunyans historically preferred a full sit-down meal), Jon and I couldn’t resist the siren call of small plates in Spain. On the high end of the tapas spectrum was Bar Mut, which is a short walk from Diagonal metro in [...]

Blog: An American in London - 8 May 2009

Jon and I really enjoyed most of our meals in Barcelona, but the stand-out for us was dinner at Gresca.  This July 2008 NYT article on “bistronomia” described the restaurant thus:  “Gresca practices bistronomia, which means it’s one of a growing number of Barcelona restaurants dedicated to offering high quality, contemporary — and yes, occasionally [...]

  15. Back from (Eating in) Barcelona

Blog: An American in London - 5 May 2009

The first time I visited Barcelona was in November 2005, and back then, I made the mistake of not making any dinner reservations in advance, which meant that by the time I rang up highly-sought-after Barcelona restaurants, I was too late. So instead of swanking it up at the likes of Comerc 24, I [...]

  22. Sliced Potato With Foie Gras

Blog: Jamón, jamón: Alice's Gastronomic Adventures - 25 March 2009

This was my first encounter with Foie Gras which is made out of the liver of a duck or a goose that has been specially fattened. I think it is typically American to imagine anything outside of hamburger or chicken meat as scary or unappetizing. Because we never see our meat except for in plastic wrap, we have a hard time when we actually encounter the real animal or are forced to imagine where our food has come from.
