Lonely Planet review

The Fine Arts Museum, housed in the beautiful former Convento de la Merced, is Andalucia's best art museum, with the 17th-century Sevillan masters Murillo, Zurbarán and Valdés Leal especially well represented.

The Museo de Bellas Artes does full justice to Seville's leading role in Spain's 17th-century artistic Siglo de Oro (Golden Century) and plays a huge role in placing much of the art in Seville and Andalucia in an understandable context.

The museum also holds interesting Sevillan antecedents to the golden age, and some works by great artists who worked elsewhere, such as El Greco and José de Ribera.
