Las Vistillas, Viaduct & Calle de Segovia
Jardines de las Vistillas, the leafy area around and beneath the southern end of the viaduct that crosses Calle de Segovia, is an ideal spot to pause and ponder the curious history of one of Madrid’s oldest barrios. Probably the best place to do this is just across Calle de Bailén where the terrazas (oper-air cafés) of Las Vistillas offer one of the best vantage points in Madrid for a drink, with views towards the Sierra de Guadarrama. During the civil war, Las Vistillas was heavily bombarded by Nationalist troops from the Casa de Campo, and they in turn were shelled from a republican bunker here. Campo del Moro
Directly behind the palace are the fountains of the Campo del Moro, so named because this is where the Muslim army camped before a 12th-century attack on the Alcázar. Now, shady paths, a thatch-roofed pagoda and palace views are the main attractions.

Casa de Campo
This 1700-hectare, somewhat unkempt semi-wilderness stretches west of Río Manzanares. Nearly half a million madrileños visit every weekend, when cyclists, walkers and picnickers overwhelm the byways and trails that criss-cross the park.

Parque del Oeste
Sloping down the hill behind the Moncloa Metro station, Parque del Oeste (West Park) is quite beautiful, with plenty of shady corners to recline under a tree in the heat of the day and fine views out to the west towards Casa de Campo.
