Dominating the western edge of the Malasaña district, this formidable former barracks houses government archives, libraries and the Hemeroteca Municipal (the biggest collection of newspapers and magazines in Spain) behind its 228m facade. Also contained within its walls is the Museo Municipal de Arte Contemporáneo de Madrid, with contemporary Spanish and international paintings, sculpture, photography and graphic art.
