    Museo Chicote

The founder of this Madrid landmark is said to have invented more than a hundred cocktails, which the likes of Hemingway, Ava Gardner, Grace Kelly, Sophia Loren and Frank Sinatra all enjoyed at one time or another. It’s still frequented by film stars and top socialites, and it’s at its best after midnight when a lounge atmosphere takes over, couples cuddle on the curved benches and some of the city’s best DJs do their stuff. The 1930s-era interior only adds to the cachet of this place.

    La Escalera de Jacob

With magicians, storytellers, children’s theatre (on Saturdays and Sundays at noon) and live jazz and other musical genres, ‘Jacob’s Ladder’ is one of Madrid’s most original bars. And regardless of what’s on, it’s worth stopping by here for creative cocktails that you won’t find anywhere else – the fray aguacate (Frangelico, vodka, honey, avocado and vanilla) should give you an idea of how far they go.

Mercado de la Reina Gin Club

In this area of Madrid known for its classy cocktails, this gin club fits right in. But unlike other choices nearby (eg Bar Cock, Del Diego and Museo Chicote), this place has no pretensions to former grandeur; the décor is super-modern and, like the clientele, all dressed in black. With 20 types of gin (€7 to €12) and DJs at night from Thursday to Saturday, it’s a happening place.

    Balmoral

Very Salamanca. This cocktail bar is something of a barrio antique, open since 1955 and with a dignified, moneyed British atmosphere. The cocktails are exceptional and original – we couldn’t quite bring ourselves to try the ‘bull shot’, which consists of vodka and beef consommé...

    Krypton

In the heart of Chamberí, Krypton is a dimly lit, smoky bar with quirky decoration dedicated to the edgy art of Japanese comics, music that could be jazz, electronica or hip-hop, and good cocktails (including mojitos ). We love it, but it won’t be to everyone’s taste.

    Gaia Cocktail Lounge

Heartbreakingly sleek and oh-so-cool, Gaia is one of the best bars in the centre, serving up delicious cocktails to a DJ soundtrack of jazz, funk, lounge and occasional house music.
