Entertainment in Spain

    Cum Laude

One of Salamanca's most enduring bars, Cum Laude has a sprawling mock-palace interior. Tuesday is Cabaret, Thursday is Ladies Night (both from 11pm) and the rest of the week is just plain good fun.

    Stromboli

After a number of years as a fairly standard small club, Stromboli has found its niche as a minimalist cocktail bar. In addition to the cocktails – our favourite is ‘Bubaloo’ (vodka, syrup of bubble gum and sugar, mint, blueberry juice and lemon) – there’s also a carefully chosen menu of Champagnes and cavas (sparkling wines). There's also a popular dancefloor.

    Garamond

An enduring stalwart of the Salamanca night with medieval-style decor, Garamond has music that's good to dance to without straying too far from the mainstream.

    Le Cabrera

In the basement below the exciting new tapas bar of the same name, this oh-so-chic cocktail bar is every bit as appealing. The more than 60 different cocktail varieties (€9 to €14) are the work of Diego Cabrera, the long-standing barman of renowned master chef Sergi Arola and, along with the designer decor, the combination has transformed this into one of the ‘in’ places in not just the barrio but the entire city.

    Pícaro

Pícaro is a popular bar-cafe serving an eclectic range of copas (mixed drinks) and there’s live music most Friday nights. It really gets going after 2.30am on weekends.

    Museo del Whisky

Appropriately named, this Irish/Scottish style bar is full of bottles of Scotland’s finest (3000 bottles to be exact) as well as a museum's worth of whisky related knick-knacks – old bottles, tacky mugs and glasses and a nice, dusty, museum-like atmosphere.

    Lola Cafe

Re-creating a sultry Latin night in the midst of medieval Girona with occasional live salsa and rumba, this bar really hits the spot if you happen to have a weakness for caipirinhas, mojitos and more.

    La Trébede

As good for tapas (try the picadillo con patatas – minced meat with potatoes) as for first drinks (wines by the glass start at €1.50), La Trébede is always full. The decor is eclectic – deer's antlers, a saddle and the scales of justice – and the sign outside promising 350km to Santiago may just prompt you to abandon the Camino and stay a little longer.

    Garcilaso

This attractive multilevel place has a bit of everything, from trashy late-night dancing on weekends to comedy nights and quiet afternoons with a coffee or a cocktail. The chill-out zone upstairs gives you respite from the dancefloor.

    El Candil

Over 30 different hot chocolate combinations on the menu at this cave-like cafe-bar, as well as a good selection of beers and cava for its nocturnal transformation into a cellar bar.

    Desafinado

Desafinado is a heaving dance bar with DJs that also offer good jazz.

    Camarote Madrid

We could equally recommend this fantastic and enduringly popular bar for its tapas (the little ceramic cup of salmorejo is rightly famous). But the extensive wine list wins the day amid the buzz of a happy crowd swirling around the central bar. Bullfighting photos on the walls notwithstanding, the recent renovations have thrust this sophisticated place into the 21st century.

    Café Botanico

Opened in October 2011, Café Botanico combines a florist (think plenty of greenery, including fragrant herbs) and a cafe serving great coffee, a tea menu and a handful of snacks and cakes. It has a real buzz about it, there's contemporary art in the basement and the tables are almost always full regardless of the hour.
