  3. Behold the calçotada!!!

Blog: La Tortuga Viajera - 3 April 2012

I found love in Catalonia – in the colorful hanging buildings of Girona, inside the quirky walls of Dalí’s house in Cadaqués, and while tip-toeing across river stepping stones in Besalú. But my biggest Catalonian love? The calçot. The Catalonia region claims cuisine fame for many things: pan con tomate (bread with tomato), crema catalana [...]

  4. Catalonia – the culinary highlights

Blog: La Tortuga Viajera - 27 March 2012

Pueblos, rivers, art, bla bla bla. Let’s get to the really important stuff: the Catalán food. Am I right? Remember that first day in Girona? We schlepped up, down and all around town. I adored that city, but wow it made me hungry. And thank goodness for that because, unbeknown to me, a nine-course meal [...]

  5. Besalú, I love you

Blog: La Tortuga Viajera - 22 March 2012

After surviving the twists and turns departing Cadaqués, we arrived in Besalú – the next stop on our tour of Catalonia. Without knowing much about my new destination, I could tell it was already trying to lure me in with its arched bridge and the promise of another villa. Could my emotions handle being toyed [...]

  6. A river (ish) runs through it

Blog: La Tortuga Viajera - 13 March 2012

Before we hit the road and head to Besalú, I want to introduce you to a peculiar little place we stopped by near Girona – Banyoles. It’s got all the pueblo essentials: a Plaza Mayor, sunny terrazas for tapas and café, cute old folks taking paseos. Check, check and check. I suppose it’s most noteworthy [...]

  7. Crushing on Cadaqués

Blog: La Tortuga Viajera - 6 March 2012

I departed Girona feeling like I’d left a piece of my heart behind, but it was time to move on to our next destination: Cadaqués. The journey wouldn’t be easy, though, requiring a twisty turny drive up and over the mountains to the secluded fishermen villages at their base. Stomachs all topsy-turvy, we arrived in [...]

  8. Eat like a Spaniard to Lose Weight

    Blog: Vagabond3 - 5 March 2012

It seems like every time I flip a magazine page, meet up with girlfriends or listen to the chatter around the gym, a new crazy fad diet is taking over. I can’t be the only one who hates these ridiculous diets, and I’m sick and tired of putting myself through the agony of saying no [...]

  9. Daytrip to Montserrat from Barcelona

Blog: Snaps and Flip Flops - 4 March 2012

I saw a photo of Monsterrat while researching for daytrip options while in Barcelona, and got convinced that I just have to go there. It was one of those cases where the real thing did not live up to my expectations. On hindsight, I wished i had spent more time exploring Barcelona instead. The trip itself is easily doable on your own. Trains leave from Placa Espanya in Barcelona and take you directly to the monastery. You can buy combined tickets from Placa Espanya, which covers a return ticket and funiculars for 25 EUR (add 15 EUR for lunch and museum).

  10. Falling for Girona

Blog: La Tortuga Viajera - 1 March 2012

Colorful hanging houses that line a bridge-crossed canal? Girona tourists might do a double take thinking they’ve made a wrong turn, ending up in Venice or Spain’s capital of hovering homes, Cuenca. But what a lovely wrong turn that would be, as this Catalán town – just over an hour away from Barcelona – will [...]

  11. Let’s talk about Catalonia

Blog: La Tortuga Viajera - 27 February 2012

Last week I returned from a dreamy holiday in Catalonia filled with food, pueblos and villas (see pictures here). But before I indulge you in all of the details, I thought I’d introduce you to the little wonderland that is the northeast of Spain. Grab a glass of wine, and let the session begin. So [...]

Blog: La Tortuga Viajera - 21 February 2012

Someone pinch me, I think I’m in a dream. Actually, I hope I’m in a dream – after the mass quantities of food and wine I’ve been consuming, I’m kind of hoping this isn’t real. I’ve spent the last four days hopping from pueblo to pueblo and fancy villa to fancier villa (courtesy of Charming [...]

A man and a woman walk hand in hand through the speckled sunshine in Olot, Catalonia. Like many towns in the Spanish Pyrenees, the sounds of church bells, chatter and the occasional car drift through the trees, past the shops selling the local liquor, ratafia, and on through the stone alleyways to escape to the mountains beyond. Unlike the others...
