Barcelona's oldest church, St Paul in the Fields was founded by monks in the 9th century. Although the squat, rural-looking building shows its age, it has some wonderful Visigothic sculptural decoration on its doorway and a fine Romanesque cloister.

Badly damaged and turned into soldiers' barracks in 1835, the church retains a sadly neglected air. The doorway to the church bears some rare Visigothic decoration, predating the Muslim invasion of Spain. Inside, the beautiful Romanesque cloister is the main reason for dropping by.
