Igueldo
White and maroon décor and smooth lines tempt patrons into this refined, contemporary Basque option. Sink into a white leather chair or perch at the back bar for chuletón a la parrilla (one kilo of grilled chop for two), or an intense cochinillo confitado con peras (suckling pig prepared with pears). Igueldo is a winner at lunch with a menú del día (€20) that include choices such as penne con txipirones (pasta with tiny cuttlefish).

Zarautz
A short hop away from the train station, you can take in some quality Basque tapas at the bar any time of the day, or retire to the restaurant for a full meal, such as carpaccio de carn amb formatge Idiazábal (beef carpaccio with a tangy Basque cheese). The owner is a dessert specialist, so save some room. It’s a rough-and-tumble-looking joint, but don’t let that put you off.

Ipar-Txoko
Inside this Basque eatery the atmosphere is warm and traditional. Hefty timber beams hold up the Catalan vaulted ceiling, and the bar (with tapas available) has a garish green columned front. Getxo-born Mikel turns out traditional cooking from northern Spain, including a sumptuous chuletón (T-bone steak for two – look at the size of that thing!) or a less gargantuan tortilla de bacalao (a thick salted-cod omelette).
Then there are curiosities like kokotxas de merluza, heart-shaped cuts from the hake’s throat. The wine list is daunting but Mikel is on hand to explain everything – in English, too.

Centre Cultural Euskal Etxea
Barcelona has plenty of Basque and pseudo-Basque eateries, but this is the real deal. It captures the feel of San Sebastián better than many of its newer competitors. Choose your pintxos (snacks), sip txacoli wine, and keep the toothpicks so the staff can count them up and work out your bill.
