Sala Mephisto
Heavy metal, Gothic and hard-rock fans converge on this one-time workshop for concerts by groups from all over Europe. The music determines the crowd, so expect pale people in theatrically dark clothing. Long-haired lads with tats and leather mingle with pale wraiths in flowing black dresses and heavy make-up. It’s all in the name of good fun. Heavy metal lovers should especially check the place out from 1am on Saturdays.

Heliogàbal
This compact bar is a veritable hive of cultural activity where you never quite know what to expect. Aside from art exhibitions and poetry readings, you will often be pleasingly surprised by the eclectic live-music program. Jazz groups are often followed by open jam sessions, and experimental music of all colours gets a run. While many performers are local, international acts also get a look-in.

Bel-Luna Jazz Club
This basement restaurant-cum-bar-cum-club is not the prettiest location but attracts a full jazz program, seven nights a week, with local and visiting acts. You can join in for dinner, but frankly you’re better off dining elsewhere. When the last act finishes, the place turns into a kind of preclub club with tunes from the 1980s and ’90s.

Zac Club
In what was originally Barcelona’s classic La Boîte, the Zac Club has now emerged as a live-music venue, with a broad range of concerts held on most nights of the week. The small stage is occupied by bands from 9pm to about midnight, from which point the place converts into a small, somewhat congenial club.

La Cova Del Drac
Run by the Mas i Mas group that owns Jamboree, this is a good, if awkwardly located, spot for jazz sessions most nights of the week. In the rather cosy atmosphere, you can stumble across anything from local solo vocalists to Dixieland, from Afro blues to avant garde. Start times vary, but tend towards the late side.

Elèctric Bar
Concerts get under way between 10pm and 11pm in this long and somewhat dingy bar. Generally, we’re looking at home-grown bands revelling in the chance to bring jazz, blues, funk, bossa nova and much more to a small stage and appreciative crowd. It can get pretty crowded in here but often the bands are fresh and fun.

Jazzroom
Run by the Mas i Mas group that owns Jamboree, this is a good if awkwardly located spot for occasional jazz sessions: be sure to look up the programme before heading there as it is not always open. Start times vary – often nothing happens before 11pm. On weekends it can stay open as late as 5am.

Espai Movistar
This giant big top, complete with a stage and space for 2000 punters, is an interesting concert space that attracts some major Spanish and foreign acts (Bryan Adams played here in spring 2008). It also offers an internet café, bar, exhibition space and more.
