The Alhambra walls tease you and reveal little, but inside the marvellously decorated emirs' palace, Palacio Nazaríes (Nasrid Palace), Generalife (the Alhambra's gardens), and dozens of courtyards, the nooks and crannies are filled with beautiful decorations and fascinating stories from the days of Alhambra's glory.
The spell can be shattered by the average 6000 visitors who traipse through this Unesco World Heritage site each day, so try to visit first thing in the morning or late in the afternoon.

Book early and leave plenty of time to view this place.

It's been seven years since I was at the Alhambra and the gardens have stayed with me. The sound of running water is pervasive everywhere you walk and the temperature is always a few degrees cooler than in the city.
Make sure to book early as the number of people allowed into the Alhambra is strictly controlled.

I chose to go early in the morning which was a good call. There were few people and I spent hours wandering about the gardens and around the pools and fountains. The buildings are wonderful and the mosaics, engravings and columns that decorate, frame and support the vaulted ceilings are spectacular.
