Lonely Planet review for Restaurante Tragabuches

Sleek, modern Tragabuches is Ronda’s poshest restaurant. Points for creativity are won for the venison and sweet potatoes and the pork trotters with squid and sunflower seeds.

    Epicurean epic

This restaurant is etched on my memory as The Best Meal I Ever Had. Since I've now had over 40,000, that's a tough call, but I'm prepared to make it because of two crucial factors - quality and quantity. My wife and I plumped (literally) for the 15-course degustation menu, which was always going to be an event, but the sheer scale and excellence left us in a merry, fuzzy stupor.

Quality - I had never had foie gras before, and certainly never expected to taste it partnered with caramel. But by jove it worked! So many surprises using flavours that possibly had never even been in the same room together. The whole meal was so creative, and was not just adventurous for the sake of it.

Quantity – 15-courses is a helluva journey, and we had to take the slow road on this one. It started off not and bite-sized, like culinary shooters, but soon expanded into each one being practically starter-size. My wife even gave up after about the 12th course, and I had to carry us to the end, so effectively had 18 courses. I shouldn’t really be proud of gluttony, but see it as one of my greatest achievements nonetheless.
