Lonely Planet review for Seoul Museum of Art

Ultra-modern, bright galleries hide behind the forbidding brick-and-stone facade of the 1927 Supreme Court building. The gallery hosts top-notch exhibitions that are always worth a visit. Check the website for painting classes and other details.

All depends on the 'visiting' exhibit

This museum is nicely tucked away from the bustling multi-lane streets of Seoul, which gives it a more relaxed feel on approach. It's hard not to review the gallery without taking into account of the 'visiting' exhibit. An Andy Warhol exhibition was on when I visited, unfortunately for me I am not a fan of his work but paid the expensive entry ticket (relative to Korea; 12,000 instead of 700 won is quite a difference), hoping other permanent exhibits would interested me, whilst taking in Warhol's exhibition in passing. Sadly the gallery gives 70-80% of the gallery to the visiting exhibit, and therefore I was left disappointed. The gallery is a nice space although deceptively small from the outside. My advice is, if you aren't a fan of the visiting exhibit give it a miss and spend the combined entrance fee on entering all the Seoul palaces and more for the same price. Unless more space was given to the Warhol exhibit than normal, if you aren't a far of the visiting exhibit artist, then there really isn't much else to see, and with it being so small there isn't much to see full stop.
