Lonely Planet review for Dolkemaeul Tofu House

The star here is the excellent sundubu (uncurdled tofu) cooked in a stone pot and served with hotpot rice, soup, fish and side dishes. Add an egg to the tofu, spoon the rice into a bowl and pour hot water from the kettle into the rice hotpot to make burnt-rice tea that takes away the spiciness.

    Dolkemaeul Tofu House

    zahrajaan recommends this,

This chain of hearty sun du bu jiggaes ( a hot and spicy tofu stew) is definately one of the easier options for a foriegner in Seoul especially those with limited Korean! The menus all have english translations which even if at times might not be completely accurate, give you a pretty good idea of what to expect! The random basket of uncooked eggs on your table is for your steaming jiggae and one can be popped in as soon as it arrives on the table so as to ensure the egg is cooked. The rice should be dished out into the seperate dishes that they will provide you and then rice soup can be made by pouring hot water into the rice dish. It's all a very meticulous and enjoyable experience when you know what to do!

The service will vary from restaurant to restaurant but as this is clearly geared towards foriegners as well as locals I'm sure you'll be greeting with the common curiousity that most Koreans have for foriegners. The spralling side dishes are a treat too.

However, for the more advernturous rather than give in to the convenience of a good old English menu I'd advice just popping into any of the local Korean joints which frequent every corner and dare to try your luck by just pointing to a picture. When it comes to jiggaes, if you like hot and spicy soups you can't really be disappointed. The best jiggaes for vegetarians are the sun du bu jiggae or the dwenchan jiggae. These popualar local places are where most of the locals hang out and they'll leave an extra chon won(1000 won) in your pocket too!
