Order sogeumgui for a whole chicken on its own or modeumgui for a whole chicken cut up and served on a platter with pasta, pressed rice cakes, corn and raisins, covered in a sweet chilli sauce.

    Famous for its brisk service and reliable samgyetang, which includes a thimbleful of insamju (ginseng wine). Put salt and pepper into the sauc­er and dip the pieces of chicken into it. Drink the soup at the end. Black chicken (ogolgyetang) is W20,000. The 2nd-floor restaurant has a sign with red Chinese characters.

    A convivial young crowd comes here for the jjimdak experience, a very spicy concoction of chicken, noodles, potatoes and vegetables that comes on a platter meant for sharing. The restaurant is spread over three floors, and seafood and mushroom options have been added to the menu. The signboard has white Chinese characters.

    This typically convivial beer-and-chicken joint is clean and modern. A tap beer costs W2500 and the chicken comes roasted on a spit or fried. Jeongiguidongdak is a whole barbecue chicken served with side dishes of pickled daikon (radish) cubes and shredded cabbage topped with mayonnaise.
