Introducing Hwajinpo

This sandy beach is popular in July and August but almost deserted at other times. Nearby is a lake and three summer villas (admission adult/child W2000/1500 for all three; 9am-6pm) that belonged to former politicians. Everything is within walking distance. ‘English body language’ is spoken by the staff at the tourist information centre (680 3677; 9am-6pm Apr-Oct, 9am-5pm Nov-Mar).

Shaped like a giant whale, Hwajinpo Aquarium (682 7300; adult/child W1000/800; 9am-5pm) has displays of shellfish, fossils, coral and rare fish. On the 3rd floor is a teashop (teas W2000), which offers 10 strongly flavoured medicinal teas that are brewed on the premises, and views of the beach and lake.

January Pension (682 2630; www.januarypension.com; r W60,000) A brand new, spic-and-span pension that’s a stone’s throw from the water. It has an English-speaking owner, a café and computer. Giant plate-glass windows in the dining room make it a great place to watch the sun rise. A simple breakfast of toast, jam and coffee is included. From mid-July to mid-August rooms are W90,000.

Hwajinpo Condo Restaurant (682 0500; meals W4000-10,000; 8am-9pm) The only restaurant in the area, this has bibimbap or a good fish meal for two people with seaweed soup and side dishes.
