Culture Shock Ratings

The culture shock rating considers the level of development in the location, the area's infrastructure and how easy it is to access services. It also takes into consideration how different the food and customs are and whether English is widely spoken. While generalisations are always tricky, here’s a summary of the ratings:

Rating 1

This is the least confronting of Intrepid's product range. English is the native language and the food, customs and access to services will be familiar to you.

Rating 2

You will probably have experienced food like this in restaurants back home and English is commonly spoken. Services are available most of the time but there may be some cultural differences.

Rating 3

Expect some culture shock. You will be exposed to signs of poverty and access to services may be sporadic. The food will be quite different to home and English speakers harder to find. Respecting the local culture will make it easier to fit in and really experience the location.

Rating 4

The comforts of home are more of a rarity. English is not common and the food will be quite different to what you are used to. It is important to observe some of the local customs to not cause offence. Many of the locals' standard of living may be confronting.

Rating 5

You're really out there! You'll need to pay specific attention to health and hygiene. A large proportion of locals' living conditions are a world away from standards you are used to. You may have difficulty finding an English speaker and there is little or no access to services. Paying heed to local customs is essential.

Itinerary

Day 1 Quito

Arrive in Ecuador and explore picturesque Quito on foot.

Days 2-3 Isla San Cristobal

Fly to the Galapagos Islands and cycle around Isla San Cristobal, stopping at the Interpretation Center to learn the history of the Galapagos.

Day 4-6 Isla Floreana/Isla Isabela

Glimpse dolphins and albatross on the way to Isla Isabela, via Isla Floreana. Scale the Sierra Negra volcano, visit a breeding centre for the giant tortoise and see the convict-built Wall of Tears.

Days 7-8 Isla Santa Cruz

Greet the day kayaking in pristine waters in search of the Galapagos penguin and other wonderful creatures, before making tracks to Isla Santa Cruz. Visit the interesting and informative Charles Darwin Research Station to meet the breeds of tortoises and land iguanas brought back from the brink of extinction, then head to the white sands of Tortuga Bay to swim and see the quirky marine iguanas playing in the breakers.

Day 9 Quito

Farewell the Galapagos Islands and return to the mainland of Ecuador.

Day 10 Lima

Fly to Peru and enjoy an orientation walk of Lima.

Days 11-12 Amazon Jungle

Fly to Puerto Maldonado then travel by motorised canoe into the dense forest of the Amazon.

Day 13 Cuzco

Enjoy free time in charming Cuzco.

Day 14 Sacred Valley/Ollantaytambo

Visit a local community in the Sacred Valley then journey to the ancient town of Ollantaytambo.

Days 15-18 Inca Trail/Machu Picchu/Cuzco

Hike with a local guide across high plateaux and through cloud forests to stunning Machu Picchu.

Day 19 Cuzco

Get reacquainted with Cuzco.

Days 20-22 Puno/Lake Titicaca

Travel to Puno on the shores of Lake Titicaca. Visit the floating Uros Islands and enjoy a homestay.

Days 23-24 La Paz

Hit the streets of La Paz to celebrate this incredible journey.
