Sandwich restaurants in South America

  1. A

    Normandie

With its varnished wood paneling and deadpan waiters, Normandie strives hard to look like a typical French café. The food is equally Gallic: think well-executed classics like lapin en gibelotte (rabbit in red wine) or duck à l’orange.

  2. Masay

While Masay appears to have your standard Chilean sandwich/pizza restaurant menu, it does everything better than standard. It's very clean, offers fast service, serves oversized and always quality sandwiches, and abundantly topped pizzas. For those who are tired of the southern 'red meat served with red meat' diet, it offers top-rate chicken sandwiches made with breast meat and individual vegetarian pizzas that are a meal in themselves.

  3. B

    El Remo

This a popular gathering spot. It stays open late and serves tasty sandwiches, lunches (fish with a salad usually) and, with advance warning, lobster for two people. Ask to try the homemade murtillado - rum infused with murtillas, a blueberrylike red fruit.

It is always smart to reserve ahead at restaurants, especially if more than two people will be dining, or if you desire lobster or more elaborate dishes. If you don't like seafood, you may be in trouble, although basic vegetarian options can be concocted on request.

On weekends, the waterfront location (located in the Pontão) attracts a roaring nightlife crowd as well.

  8. G

    El Ruedo

It doesn’t stray too far from the steak, sandwich and pizza formula here, but the plaza-side spot under big shady trees is a winner, as are the limonadas con soda (lemon juice with soda water) on a hot day.
