  1. A

    Minuteman Revolutionary Pizza

This convivial spot, inside the Toñito Hotel, run by Chris from Boston and his Bolivian wife Sussy, is a deserved travelers’ favorite with the best pizzas in town, tasty alternatives like salads, pastas and sandwiches and fantastic desserts. It’s also a cozy spot for a beer or candlelit glass of Tarija wine or a hearty breakfast (B$20 to B$30) with all you can drink coffee or tea. If you have old sunglasses, you can do a good deed – drop them off here and they’ll be donated to the salt workers in Colchani.

  2. B

    Confitería Bolsi

More than a confitería, this traditional place (it's been going since 1960) serves everything from sandwiches to curried rabbit and garlic pizza. Try the surubí casa nostra (a superb selection of different pasta types and flavors on one dish).

  3. C

    Los Leños

Pizzas for homesick travelers are baked in a wood-burning oven that adds warmth to the laid-back atmosphere. Rock music is the only soundtrack. If you’re more impressed by the food than we were, add your personalized scribble to the already-covered-with-graffiti walls.

  4. D

    Sole Mio

The best pizzas in Cochabamba are to be found here. The owners, encouragingly, are from Napoli and import the ingredients for their robust brick-oven, wood-fired pizzas – thin crust, light on the sauce. Soft opera music, rich Italian wines and excellent service make this a comfortable place to linger a while over a meal. They also serve a range of meat and pasta entrées.

  5. E

    Pachapapa

With rustic wooden tables and a crackling fire pit just off the Plaza San Blas, this airy outdoor restaurant has a menu full of classic Peruvian dishes with African, European and Asian accents, from cuzqueño lamb soup to roast trout with wild fennel, plus oven-fired pizzas and fruit-flavored piscococktails. There's live Andean harp music on most evenings.

  6. F

    Pizzería Güerrín

Just point at a prebaked slice behind the glass counter and eat standing up with the rest of the guys. To be more civilized, sit down and order your pizza freshly baked – this way you’ll also get to choose from a greater variety of toppings. Empanadas and plenty of desserts are also available.

  7. G

    Tiramisú

Bright murals, rough-hewn tables and cheerful red-checked cloths set the tone at this busy pizzeria. You’ll spend more time choosing one of the myriad thin-crust pizzas than wolfing it down – consider the gamberetti, which combines buffalo mozzarella and prawns.

  8. H

    Bráz

Cooking up what many consider Sampa's best pizza in wood ovens, this rather upscale but always animated spot is worth the 10 to 15 minute walk from Av Paulista.

  9. I

de un Rincón de La Boca

Many argue this is the best pizza in town (it's the crust). The wine list is very average, but there's no corkage charge, so grab a bottle before you come.

  10. J

    La Gringa

Despite its rather unappealing name, this is the go-to place in town for pastas, pizza and parrilla. Good salads, too.

    Inkari Pub Pizzeria

This pizzeria has a delicious happy-hour special of a personal pizza and a copa de vino (glass of wine) for just S13.

  13. L

    New York Pizza

Pop in here for thin-crust pizza starting at $1.10 a slice.

  14. Morelia

Choose from 26 kinds of excellent pizza here – the Napolitana (with tomatoes and garlic) is wonderfully simple, though the Montecattini (prosciutto and arugula) can’t be beat. Ask for it a la parrilla and it’ll arrive thin and crisp. For dessert, the frambuesas (raspberries) with ice cream are a piece of heaven and better than the chocolate mousse. There’s an enclosed patio in front that opens when the sun shines. Also at Humboldt 2005 in Palermo Hollywood.

  15. Pizzeria Italia

The plaza is ringed by a number of inexpensive local places and pizzerias; all have ordinary menus, acceptable fare and a typically tropical sense of urgency and service. Local volunteers swear that Pizzeria Italia is the best of the mediocre bunch. If you're in a rush or on a strict budget, there are many food stalls around the mercado municipal and in the Comedor Popular to placate your growling stomach, but you'll need a bit of gastric stamina.

  16. M

    Scarola Pizzaria

Good food, good service and good chope (draft beer) make for a varied clientele, from backpackers back from jungle trips to professionals pontificating on the latest opera performance. The affordable lunch spread has all the standards, including fresh grilled meats, while pizza and beer are the dinner of choice. One of the few places around that’s open late, even on Sunday.

  17. Malaika

Trendy eating has arrived in Concordia in the form of this relaxed and handsome cafe-bar on the Plaza 25 de Mayo. It serves a variety of tasty meals, with salads, pizza, tapas, snacks and more elaborate fare, including plenty of vegetarian options and daily specials. Decent wines, caring service and a romantic mood seal the deal. Also lunches for AR$22.

  18. N

    Pizza à Bessa

The rodízio (all-you-can-eat) option here is implausibly cheap and the best way to try some inventive ingredients like pureed pumpkin, broccoli, and an outrageous dessert pizza with a huge scoop of ice cream. The queijo coalho and rapadura (dried sugarcane juice) pizza is a masterpiece.

  19. Adolfo's Gourmet

If you can score one of the seven outside balcony tables, you'll dine with one of the best views in Ayacucho: the Plaza de Armas and all its activity. Upstairs on the 2nd floor Adolfo's does pizzas, pastas and a sprinkling of Peruvian dishes. Good sangria and excellent pizza make for a satisfying feed.

  20. O

    Il Postino

Pizza and pasta are served with panache in this atmospheric brick warehouse eatery. It’s popular with all, and you often have to wait for a table. It’s worth it: the standard (of the pizza especially) is sky-high. It also serves various tapas-sized portions. There’s another branch nearby at Junín 86.

  21. P

    Largo das Letras

Directly above the Largo do Guimarães bonde stop, this low-key café, bookstore and cultural spot (with capoeira classes four nights a week) has outdoor tables where neighborhood crowds enjoy decent pizzas (served from 5pm onwards). There’s live music from Wednesday to Sunday.

  23. Q

    Pomodoro

Hidden behind Inca walls off the Plaza de Armas, this romantic Italian restaurant concocts almost everything from scratch, including its pasta dough. Pizzas are cooked in a terracotta wood-fired oven that warms the subdued, artistically designed space. The best deals are at lunchtime.

  24. R

    Antica

On a street littered with European restaurants, this is one of the most reasonable: a woody, candle-bedecked spot serving house-made pastas, gnocchis and pizzas from a wood-fired oven. There is antipasto, as well as a decent wine list strong on South American brands (from S40).

  25. S

    Chef Pato

A tasty spin on standard Chilean food, plus it has decent pizzas and pastas. Chef Pato's is a reliable, affordable choice and is open later than other restaurants. The chicken in mushroom sauce is worth a try and the dense homemade bread and salsas are memorable.

  26. T

    Malaespina

A chic restaurant-bar catering to playful palates, Malaespina is lustrous and low lit with ample lounge space. A wide selection of gourmet salads and sandwiches fills the menu and a huge flat-screen TV shows fútbol (soccer) matches and music videos.

  27. Oliver

On the plaza, this homey, multilevel, wooden-tabled restaurant is a reliable choice for tasty pizza, bruschetta and a couple of creative meaty mains. The terrace on the plaza is also a fine place for a sundowner. Wine prices are mostly over the odds.
