Don’t miss the tiny entrance on the town’s Plaza de Armas; it opens into a large, bright cafe selling what might be the best ice cream in northern Peru. The cafe has about 20 changing flavors, including Italian classics like stracciatella (vanilla with chocolate chips) and others made with local and seasonal fruit. Excellent espressos, cappuccinos with giant foam and homemade pies round out the menu.

Back-Stube Konditorei is one of the best places to eat in town, this welcoming bakery-restaurant has excellent breakfasts, tempting cakes and pastries as well as pasta, vegetarian plates and memorable sauerbraten (marinated pot-roast beef) with spätzle (German dough noodles). There’s also a great terraced area, and a book exchange.

It's hard not to stop at the sight of the chairs here, whose shaggy, multicolored upholstering makes them look like pom-poms, or the Fry Guys from the '70s McDonald's commercials. And once you stop, you may as well pop in for a piece of pie, which comes in a dozen or so varieties. Better yet, come here for dessert after Italian dinner across the street.

You couldn’t ask for a better location than this rooftop cafe: atop the Iglesia de la Merced, right by the bells, with stellar city views. They serve very tasty juices, adequate coffee, delicious cakes and light meals; you may have to wait for a table though, as it’s a small space.

To satisfy sweet cravings, stop by local favorite Recanto de Dona Sula, where homemade candies, ice creams and liqueurs are made from local fruits. Both charming and environmentally conscious (recycling is a priority here), Dona Sula’s is located next to the church.
