  2. B

    La Bodeguita del Medio

Named after one of Hemingway’s favorite haunts, the mojitos at this atmospheric joint do him proud and are two-for-one between 7pm and 9pm. The Cuban dishes and bar snacks all go down well, and there’s occasional live music.

  3. C

    Ram Jam

A trendy hot spot with the lot: great food and drinks, mood lighting and live music. There are vegetarian options, English breakfasts and micro-brewed beer. They are proud of the reputation: ‘come for a meal and stay until far too late…’

  4. D

    Cafe Sol y Luna

A low-key, Dutch-run hangout offering cocktails, good coffee and tasty international meals. It has three cozy levels with a book exchange and an extensive guidebook reference library (many current Lonely Planet titles), talks, salsa nights, live music and other activities.

    Asunción Rocks

If you're looking to get your rocks off, rock on at Asunción Rocks. The spot for after-parties and general nocturnal misbehavior, but not totally uncool before 01:00 either, come on down and see what all the fuss is about.

Note that bars charge a cover price (more for men!) and can be crowded at weekends.

    La Piojera

Saved from developers by protests from its loyal clientele – including presidents and poets – this bare-bones drinking den is the real deal. Noisy regulars pack the sticky tables, which are crammed with glass tumblers of the two house specialties: chicha, sweet Chilean cider, and the earth-moving (or gut-wrenching) terremoto, a potent mix of wine and ice cream. Sawdust strewn on the cement floor soaks up spillage.

    Drink Gallery

Head up to the 2nd-floor rooftop terrace at this slick restaurant-bar – on a hot night it has the best seats in the house. Big on American football? It shows NFL games in season, and to add that extra umpff there’s beer pong night on Tuesday. Order from a large range of martinis, premium vodkas and cocktails – or try the wine float (wine with a dollop of ice cream). Dinner is available earlier on, plus brunch on weekends.

This intimate bar was popular at time of research for its pricy but well-mixed drinks, terrace, cozy interior and trance/drum 'n' bass.

    7 Angelitos

This tiny hillside haunt is the city’s unofficial hipster lounge and late-night backup: when everything else has closed and the sun has come up, knock on the door. Happy hours are 7:30pm to 9:30pm and 11pm to 11:30pm.

  13. Bogotá Beer Company

Usaquén Zona Rosa These pubby-style, upscale beer joints are a Godsend for beer lovers, with some 14 seasonal microbrews on tap. The Usaquén and Macarena locales are a bit more laid-back than the other half-a-dozen.

  14. K

    Crabs

Santa Marta, are you ready to rock? A great new rock bar with pool table, outdoor smoking terrace, decent-priced beers and spirits, and video screens paying homage to some of the more obscure monsters of rock. I mean, when did you last see an Alice Cooper video?

  15. L

    El Coq

Battling head-to-head with Armando Records for hipper-than-thou rights in the city, this see-and-be-seen spot evokes a French countryhouse/greenhouse, complete with farmhouse basketball goals and Spanish moss strewn across the retractable ceilings. The electro/indie soundtrack skips happily between Phoenix and Friendly Fires, then throws you for a loop with '80s hip-hop. Andrés Juan, a Colombian actor who isn't afraid to throw down with the cool kids, runs the show.

  16. Ganso Bar

Treehouse meets circus meets Batman! The hallucinatory decor in tiny, friendly Ganso is enough to drive anyone to drink. The firemen’s pole and swing seats are the icing on the cake.

  17. M

    Hotel Argentino

This lanky and lowbrow Wild West saloon is much better suited to drinking than sleeping, but by all means stop by: the owner is friendly, the 1916 construction is stuffed with relics and sculptures, and the place gets more than a little lively on weekends.

  18. N

    Los Vikingos

A laid-back little corner bar serving a good range of local microbrewery beers at excellent prices. The music’s cool and the decor eclectic. DJs play on weekends.

    El Lobizón

Lobizón’s cellar-bar atmosphere, free-flowing pitchers of sangría and clericó (white wine mixed with fruit), and tasty snacks such as the famous gramajo (potatoes, ham and eggs) make it a very popular gathering place for young, artistic types.

At this ultracool and usually jam-packed bar, patrons straddle the windowsills between the dark interior plastered with vintage album covers and the sidewalk tables cooled by breezes off the Rambla.
