South America

Bar entertainment in South America

  1. A

    Cinzano

Drinkers, sailors and crooners have been propping themselves up on the cluttered bar here since 1896. It’s now a favorite with tourists, too, who come to see tuneful old-timers knocking out tangos and boleros like there’s no tomorrow.

  2. B

    Treffen

Meaning 'encounter' in German, but no words describe this quirky bar's cartoon nightmare mood, with nooks and crannies filled with stuffed animals, colorful tables and games menus. It probably exists due to Andrés Carne de Res, but that doesn't mean you won't trip the light fantastic here.

    Habeas Copus

Habeas Copus is a popular old favorite in the Pelô's Praça Quincas Berro d'Agua, which has a few hip bars that back onto it and face a common stage area. Its sister venue in Barra is also popular, and tends to draw an older crowd.

  4. D

    Piel Roja

Rumbling with late-night life, this bar swarms with local youths and the occasional adventure guide. The circular bar downstairs is the best place for wallflowers to hide; upstairs becomes a romping dance floor in the wee hours.

  5. E

    Cordón Bleu

Just up from Plaza Venezuela, 'the hipster bar' is a 50-year-old lounge with a retro vibe and good music. The decor reflects its earlier use as a bordello, with red plush sofas around the perimeter and kitschy art on the walls.

  6. F

    Choperia Brazooka

This popular four-story beer house has lots of nooks and crannies where you can while away the night over ice-cold drafts and tasty appetizers. The 20- and 30-something crowd packs this place, so arrive early to score a table.

  7. G

    Esch Café

The smoky twin of the Leblon Esch Café, this Esch offers the same selection of Cuban cigars from its humidor. Its dark-wood interior has stuffed leather chairs and there's a decent food-and-cocktail menu.

  8. H

    Tai Lounge

One of Lima's most exclusive spots, Tai Lounge draws the cream of young limeños, who appreciate the plush lounging areas, cool outside patios and suave clientele. It also hosts a good Thai restaurant.

  9. I

    Skylab Bar

It's all about the view at this modestly decorated bar in the Rio Othon Palace. From 30 floors up, the coastline unfolds, allowing a glimpse of the Cidade Maravilhosa (marvelous city) at its most striking.

    Café Floresta

With its antique murals, excellent brew and location on the ground floor of Niemeyer's Edifício Copan building near Praça da República, this stand-up-only café is a favorite of traditionalists.

    Wilkenny

This bar gets packed on weekends, though it's open nightly with live music on Tuesday and Thursday nights. Get in there early if you want to snag one of the comfy wooden booths (and bring your best pickup line).

  13. L

    Treinta y Tanto

With a great location, the candlelit ambience makes this place ripe for romantics, but a buzzing atmosphere also means it's just as good for a bunch of pals. Indulge in the many varieties of empanada if you can.

  14. M

    Cosmopolita

Behind the stained-glass doors of this 1906 saloon, Cosmopolita's bar is a fine setting in which to daydream over a few cocktails before hitting the samba clubs up the street. Or to just wait for the sunrise.

  15. N

    Andean Garden Club

Owned by the same people as the X-treme Bar, this laid-back option has an outdoor garden setting and sells beer and snacks, plus it has a climbing wall for the perennially active. Just don’t drink and climb.

  16. O

    Bar da Ponta

This small, stylish bar is set on the end of a pier perched over the bay, making it a draw around sunset. Expect a well-dressed crowd and pricey cocktails as well as excellent petiscos (bar bites).

  17. P

    El Naturista

Nominally an arepa joint, after hours this turns into a major beer drinking hangout, frequented by hippies, punks and other outlaws, despite the sign which expressly prohibits this sort of behavior.

  18. Q

    El Barranco

In the busy Albasto scene, this live-music venue and disco is a good place to start, if only for the fact that it gets a crowd before 1am. Fridays are Latin dance parties; on Saturdays there are live bands.

  19. R

    Mundo Bizarro

With its vibrant red walls and retro 1950s American diner vibe, Mundo Bizarro has been a Palermo institution for a decade. This cozy late-night bar draws names from the local music scene and film industry.

  20. S

    Kennedy Mall

Barhopping is easy at Kennedy Mall, a concentration of bars and discos in Kennedy Norte. Most have a cover charge, but also an open bar, meaning you drink for free after paying admission.

  21. T

    Alem

Do your best to drop into this bar for the long list of cocktails and what's likely to be the most stylishly designed interior you'll find in all of Mendoza province. It's hard to believe it's San Rafael.

  23. U

    Botequim

Botequim is an old-school, down-at-the-heels watering hole serving a friendly crowd. The menu has plenty of appetizers and more substantial dishes if you need something to accompany those chopes.

  24. V

    Ecla

A very welcoming bar in the Recoleta district with a good vibe and live music on Friday nights. They also do decent food. They sometimes put on club nights at the Club Social, just off Plaza Colón.

    Confidências Mineiras

Cozy and candlelit, this is one of Tiradentes’ newest nocturnal draws. Where else can you compare notes on over 500 brands of artesanal cachaça, most of them locally distilled in Minas Gerais?

    reviewed

  26. Frank Zappa

This is a striking and massive bar-cum-nightclub near the river that sometimes has live music. With a beer garden, upstairs boliche (nightclub) and more intimate spaces, there's something for everyone.

    Carnal

See and be seen – preferably in the open air with an icy vodka tonic in hand – on the rooftop terrace at Carnal. A great-looking local crowd shows up every weekend to this ever-popular watering hole.
