  10. Walking

A short walk from Cachi's plaza brings you to its picturesque hilltop cemetery; nearby is a rather unlikely airstrip. A longer walk takes you along the dirt road to Cachi Adentro, a tiny village where there's not a great deal to do save swing on the seats in the demi-plaza or sip a soda from the only store. It's a particularly lovely walk in summer, when the streams and cascades are alive with water.

  12. Gamboa

At low tide, take a walk to Gamboa, the next village on the river side of the island. The coast between the villages is filled with nooks to hide in and rocks to climb on. To start, head down Rua Fonte Grande and head right at the crossroads. You can catch the ferry back.

  13. Short Walk

For a short but pleasant walk, head east from the center on Rocafuerte and cross Río Zamora. From there, climb the small hill to the statue of the Virgin of Loja, which offers lovely city views.

  14. Walks

There are some good short walks from the village, including a popular day trek that goes up past the Cascada Escondida waterfall to Laguna Escondida. Another walk to the four waterfalls known as Cascadas Agrio starts from across the bridge at the entrance to town. The tourist office has an excellent map showing these and other walks around the area.
