English-speaking dance instructor Hélio Ricardo offers private one-on-one dance classes (in samba or forró), and he'll even provide a partner for you if you're a male. He also will take you out to dance places around town where you can practice your new moves (R$80 per person including dance lesson, R$100 for couples).

Casa de Dança Carlinhos de Jesus
At this respected dance academy in Botafogo, Carlinhos and his instructors offer evening classes in samba, forró, salsa and tango. On some Friday nights, open dance parties for students and guests are held. One of Botafogo's colorful bloco parties, Dois Pra Lá, Dois Pra Cá begins from here during Carnaval.

Núcleo de Dança Renata Peçanha
A large upstairs studio on the edge of Lapa, this dance academy offers classes in forró, salsa, zouk (a slow and sensual dance derived from the lambada) and samba. Twice-weekly classes cost about R$75 per month.
