We are renting a car and plan on driving from Durban to East London and Port Elizabeth along the Garden Route and ending up in Cape Town.
However, a friend recently told me that parts of that road are not safe and should not be driven Can anyone shed light on this advice?
Which parts are unsafe and is there another way we can go? We want to drive the Garden Route and need to end up in Cape Town ( and are not attached to being in PE or EL).
Thanks for any suggestions you may have.
We're heading over to South Africa in a few weeks for just over 2 week's holiday with a fortnight in country (arrive 10:00am on Sunday 4th, depart evening of Sunday 18th). One of my friends lived in Namibia and has recommended visiting and given us a good list of places to go, so we have a provisional itinerary which in broad terms looks like the following - any opinions on whether this is the best use of time would be greatly appreciated. I am conscious we've only given ourselves 2…
I got few of my South African neighbours ,and they told me that South Africa economy and whole country is going down ,and within 10-15 years South Africa will be the second Zimbabwe .
I was told that every white family got the wired fence around their yard ,and that you can not walk alone longer distance because of crime .I read this
So its very interesting .Is it possible to live as a tourist in SA…
I will be in South Africa between January 1. and January 10. 2017. I am a middle aged female solo traveller who is quite experienced in travelling. I would like to do a group tour to see the highlights of South Africa, esp. Krueger, Capetown, Winelands etc. and I do not want to travel by my own this time. Of course I am also open to suggestions!
I will fly in and out of Johannisburg, but I can always take a flight to Cape Town if needed.
Can you please recommend a travel agent that offers…
I am going to be in Cape Town soon and wish to hike up Table mountain, was going to do it alone but I see it is not recommended because of potential violent crime which is such a shame (by contrast you could hike any wilderness area in Southern California with a reasonable expectation of safety).
Any alternatives? Is the trail busy? How bad is the crime? Worst case scenario can I just book a tour/join a group?
I will be driving in South Africa specifically Joburg/Pretoria, Kruger NP, Blyde Canyon, PeterMaritzburg, Durban, Port Elizabeth to Mossel Bay and back, Bloemfontein, and Cape Town.
I would appreciate if you can share your opinions for hostel-like places to stay at. Thanks!
I will be driving in South Africa and was wondering if anyone had similar plans then we can join forces together, share costs and drive together - thanks.
(1) Sep 21 to 29: Joburg, Pretoria, Kruger NP [4 nights], Blyde Canyon, Durban, PeterMaritzburg, back to Joburg

is reliable WiFi in South Africa an issue? I have read that in rural areas, it may be spotty or not available, but I am more interested in major urban areas like Cape Town, Durban, Johannesburg? I am planning on working wirelessly. Will it be a problem? Paying for it, while not the best case scenario, is not too much of a problem, but very slow or spotty may be. Thanks everyone.
I have a flight in a few days to Johannesburg and I have noticed that probably I should have a visa because my trip will be more than 30 days. However I will go to Zimbabwe after 1 day in SA, than I am going to Mozambik and in the end of my holidays I will spend a few days in SA.
Do you think I can be given the possiblity to spend less than 30 days two times.
What should I do? I have flight back after 33 days. Should I buy any ticket from johannesburg in the meantime to show it at the…
I'm going to Johannesburg on the 4th September and land at 10.30am, where should I stay, I've looked at Melville?
I wanted to do a tour for the afternoon and do a day tour round Soweto and Apartheid museum.
I'm going to work on a leopard project then fly to Port Elizabeth to see the Garden Route to Cape Town. I'm hoping to set off on the 29th September.
Are there any tours you recommend? I will have spent 3 weeks seeing wildlife, so not that fussed about going to game reserves.
