At the base of the dolerite-covered Hantam Mountains, Calvinia is a remote outback town with laidback charm, located hundreds of miles from anywhere. As locals will happily tell you, Cape Town, Springbok, Upington and Victoria West are all roughly 250 miles away – reached over empty stretches of Namakwa, the Upper Karoo and the Kalahari. Home to blazing bright light, clear night skies, quaint white-stone buildings and tree-lined streets, Calvinia is the principal town in this sheep-farming region, and is quiet for most of the year. But when the rocky countryside blooms in spring, nearly all of the year’s tourists arrive in one frenetic burst.
