Lonely Planet review

Location isn’t everything – but it’s just one of the distinguishing features of this delightful backpackers. Terrific views abound: take an alfresco bath in the cliff-side tub or climb to the top of the 15m platform that’s perched in the forest among parrots, monkeys and baboons. Or simply gaze out of your room window; interiors are painted with fantastical designs featuring nubile fairies. Horse riding (1½-hour trails R175) and a guided 16km mountain biking trip (R250) taking in eight waterfalls are offered. The Wizard’s Sleeve Inn , which doubles as reception, is the spot to down a few beers in the evenings, order a made-to-order pizza or sandwich and trade travel tales around a log fire. Regular shuttles to East London (R125) and Chintsa (R150) are available, with reservations.

Our independent authors have visited Away with the Fairies and selected this as one of our recommended hostels in Hogsback.

Description provided by property

Perfectly located high up in the Amatola Mountains. Boasting incredible views of the mountains and indigenous forest with hiking trails starting in our garden.

Our view point at the bottom of the garden has a bath tub, with the best view in the area. It also has views you wouldn't believe.

We have a lively bar with scrummy meals and homemade Pizza's. We also have a quiet lounge and self catering kitchen, if you want to get away from it all.

Our accommodation ranges from camping, dorms, twins, doubles and en-suite twins and doubles, most with amazing views.

Our accommodation at Striders of 3 en-suite twins, an en-suite double and 2 en-suite triples are ideal for groups and those wanting a quiet time.

The main hostel has Frodo's and Bilbo's en-suite double rooms, The Hobbit self catering cottage and all the dorms and the camping. This is all, next to the bar and restaurant and where everything happens.

Hogsback has amazing bird and animal life, with parrots nesting in our garden, and monkeys daily visitors.
