Lonely Planet review for Johannesburg Zoo

The Johannesburg Zoo has a good selection of fierce and furry critters. The Animal Mythbuster tour (R45) is good fun; take it at night (R70) and it includes snacks and fireside marshmallow-toasting.

a baby step for wildlife watching

    carobbine recommends this,

I started my wildlife watching at the Jo'berg zoo. It was one of the nicest zoos I've ever been to - the enclosures seemed so natural and open and it felt like you could just stretch out your hand and touch the animals (in some cases, like with the giraffes and the elephants, you possible actually could have!). It was a bit surreal to look up and see the city skyline stretching above the park, as the wide open spaces and green made me forget our urban location for a minute. Lunch was surprisingly nice as well - sipped a delicious smoothie whilst sitting in the shade watching random chickens running in between and around the tables.

I did this before I did the Lion Park, which I did before I went on safari. I would definitely recommend doing the three in that order - from the zoo to the park (where you drive your car in and the lions roam around freely) to safari (where the tables are turned and you are now in their territory). It just keeps getting better that way!
