Cape Town Stadium

Lonely Planet review

Shaped like a giant, traditional African hat and wrapped with a Teflon-mesh membrane designed to catch and reflect natural light, this stadium is Cape Town’s most striking piece of contemporary architecture. Built at a cost of R4.5 billion, the stadium regularly seats 55,000, down from the 68,000 capacity for the 2010 World Cup. It’s the homeground of the soccer team Ajax Cape Town and has been used for big pop concerts by the likes of Coldplay, U2 and the Eagles. The hour-long tours will take you behind the scenes into the VIP and press boxes as well as the teams’ dressing rooms. Across from the new stadium is a section of the old Green Point Stadium: there are plans to use the grounds here for a new running and cycling track.
