Lonely Planet review for Charly’s Bakery
Don’t leave Cape Town without eating one of Charly’s chocolate cupcakes, famously decorated with blindingly bright icing designs by his wife Jacqui. There’s also a fantastic range of baked goods, including pies, and a wonderful new location in the historic premises of the one-time Judaica emporium Beikinstadt.

not a good experience at all
kaytee1 does not recommend this,
NOT for me - while tourists walk up to the counter and receive FREE tastings, and staff may taste to their leisure, the local customers, as per my experience and in my opinion, are charged for every inch, including a small extra decoration - a heart made of icing the size of half of the top of your thumb ! i ordered a birthday cake and was told that because orders were reaching a full stage that we would have to settle for a straight decorative icing to the cake instead of the usual 3D butterflies and flowers which are usually used to decorate these Expensive Cakes and the we would still have to pay Full Price ! When we arrived to receive the cake it was VERY DISAPPOINTING to be told that we would have to pay R4-25 for the little red heart - especially after paying such a high price for a standard flat icing cake! i explained to the owner that we had already paid such a high price and were receiving a standard cake - could she please just add a little heart to 'lift' the appearance of the cake! the owner (lady with the blonde hair) - arrogantly told me that if i wanted the heart it would be R4-25 ! when i told her about the cake which ended up being standard instead of fabulous, and that i just wanted a little extra touch ie the heart on a little piece of metal rod, she repeated herself :: that will be R504.25 adding the R4-25 as she spelled it out to me !! arrogant, not bothered and most certainly not the impression that all the inside of Magical Fairyland projects. no. no. not for me. never again - and to think that i have supported this bakery in the past on way too many occasions. never again. Cape Town has far better service and businesses who love their customers and treat them in a nice "hope to see you again" way.

Have your cake and eat it too..

For a sneak peek at the weekend celebration plans of Capetonians swing by late on a Friday afternoon to watch as customers pick up the artful creations of Charly's ‘mucking afazing’ cake makers. Laid out on a huge table behind the counter you'll see the various weekend orders, from birthday cakes in the shape of high-heels and cricket bats to triple-decker wedding cakes and hundreds of colourful cupcakes. Grab a seat in the sun and a slice of their infamous chocolate fudge brownie (with extra chocolate sauce) as you savour the joy that a little flour, sugar, eggs & food colouring will bring to the recipients of these magical treats.
