A uniquely Capetonian gay event are gat parties. Gat means ‘hole’ in Afrikaans, and the name comes from the original location of the party at the old Parrow Athletic Club based in a former quarry – literally a hole in the ground. The Afrikaans name is also a clue that these are parties at which mainly Afrikaans queers can indulge in their culture’s love of langarm- style ballroom dancing to country-and-western-style tunes. People go in groups and bring their own food and drink (although there’s always a bar); if you’re solo it won’t take you long to make friends and the DJs usually play a range of music that anyone can dance to. From the city it’s a 10km drive to Theo Marais Park along Marine Drive.
