We recently visited the Marovo Lagoon area of the Solomons to snorkel and had a wonderful stay at Matakuri Eco Lodge. It has several bungalows right on the lagoon side and a nice house reef on the surf side. The owner, Benjamin, meets you at the airstrip in Seghe and takes you by boat to the lodge. His wife cooks the delicious meals we all enjoyed. There's also a choice to bring your own food.
The grounds and facilities are spotless and attractive. He can take you on outings to other reefs…
Has anybody been in September or October in Samoa, Tonga, Solomon Islands, Kiribati or Nauru and knows when which month will be better? Which month are more sunny days?
It's very important to know asap.
Thanks so much for any advice;)
Hi regular Thorn Tree folk
Can anyone provide a quick current overview of life in Auki? Are the old Malaita regulars (Ozzie Giraffe, Laszlo, etc) still on this forum? I haven't spent time in Auki for maybe 5 years or so. Last time I was there things were very calm and a few nice cafes were opening up (very different to the grim time when the late Sir Fred was killed). Are things in Auki still on the up?
some years ago i contacted yo about the solomon islands.
Now, i will have a sabbatical from September till Januar this year.
What do you think? Anuta? Interesting?
I travelled whole my life, i'm not a beginner.
Can you give me some suggestions?
I've arranged a last minute (and very short) trip to Solomon Islands and was wondering what a good itinerary might look like for 5 or 6 days? I'm a solo traveller and would ideally spend a day or two diving, with the rest of the time visiting the islands/hiking/exploring local culture. Is one of Munda/Gizo/Uepi for diving worth it for only a couple of days (by making use of the internal flights) ? Or better to divide my time between say Savo and Malaita Island which are closer to Honiara?
Is there any discount on Solomon Airlines' domestic flights if you're flying internationally into Honiara with Solomon Airlines? I noticed that Sydney - Honiara returned flights are only AUD619 but Honiara - Munda returned is AUD 5xx which seems quite steep.
I’ve been to Solomon Islands recently and I would like to share some information about my trip.
First of all some general comments about Western Province, a stunningly beautiful place, especially Marovo Laggo:
nature and marine life is world class
travelling in this remote part of the planet is very revarding, but not always easy due to lack to communication. Internet is almost inexistent, sometimes there is phone coverage, in few places they rely on radio, others are totaly cut off. The good…
