    This is the best shop - bar none - for distinctly Slovenian (and affordable) folk craft, like Prekmurje black pottery, Idrija lace, beehive panels with folk motifs, decorated heart-shaped honey cakes, painted Easter eggs, Rogaška glassware, colourful bridal chests and colourful stepped stools.

    Ptujska Vinska Klet

    One of the largest cellars in Slovenia, this is the place to go if you want to buy wine, especially local tipple such as Haloze Chardonnay, Šipon or Laški Rizling. The cellar also stocks Zlata Trta, the 'Golden Vine' sweet wine dating from 1917 and the oldest vintage in Slovenia.

    Rokus Gifts - This stunning shop is the main outlet for a company manufacturing high-end glassware and crockery designed by the likes of Oskar Kagoj and Zora Stančič, reproductions of Plečnik's sketches and Trubar's original catechism, fine folk art and vintage wines.

    Wine Cellars of Slovenia (Vinske Kleti Slovenije) If you're serious about wine this enormous wine cellar and restaurant north of Centre is for you. It has a selection of 800 wines, most of which are Slovenian.

    This small souvenir shop in the Grand Hotel Union Executive specialises in products and souvenirs with distinct Ljubljana motifs. It also stocks local guides and English-language newspapers and periodicals.

    This small wine boutique located in a narrow passageway may not have as much choice as the Wine Cellars of Slovenia but it's more central, and the owners are well informed and helpful.

    Musikalje is an atmospheric shop near the Križanke is the place in Ljubljana for classical music, scores and instruments. Don't buy a piano - it will be hard to get on the plane.

    To the west of the open-air markets opposite the cathedral, the covered market on the ground floor of the Seminary has a superb range of meats, charcuterie, fish and dairy products.

    Packed into this lovely shop are some really beautiful antiques, especially glassware from the 1920s and other delightful Art Nouveau treasures. Prices are pretty reasonable too.

    You'll find a large Mercator Supermarket almost opposite the Banka Celje to the northeast. There's a more central Mercator at Prešernova ulica 1, next to the Hotel Evropa.

    In the Imam shopping centre west of the centre. There is a smaller Mercator at Cesta 4 Maja 50, diagonally opposite the tourist office.
