Lonely Planet review
This 187-room hotel is the (mainly) Art Nouveau southern wing of a two-part hostelry built in 1905 and it's still the top dog in town. It has all the trimmings you'd expect from a top European hotel: we love the above-average-size rooms, all decorated in handsome cherry-wood furniture.
It's a fancy hotel alright, and there's no better evidence of its grand status than the original Union Hall, a turn-of-the-century classic that is used primarily for meetings, concerts and gala events. Downstairs, the highly-rated Unionska Klet cellar restaurant moves to the Unionski Vrt (Union Garden) restaurant during the summer months. But it's the rooms that still remain the hotel's big attraction. If you get stuck with a room in the newer wing (built in 1966) you'll have to make do with shorter ceilings. And rooms on the 8th or 9th floors have sensational views of the castle and the Old Town from the street-facing windows. You'll also be closer to the indoor swimming pool, sauna and fitness centre on the 8th floor of Grand Hotel Union Business hotel next door - free to all guests.
