    Tramontana

    Slovenia, which cannot (it must be said) boast a truly rich tradition of indigenous music often looks to its former co-tenants, and music of the republics of the late Yugoslavia is all the rage at two clubs: Tramontana, celebrated for its Balkan žur (Balkan party), and Katastrofa (431 51 55; www.petica.si, Celovška cesta 25; ;20:00-05:00 Fri & Sat) in the Tivoli Recreation Centre in Park Tivoli.

    Vinoteka Movia

    If you're more interested in the grape than the grain, hop over to this excellent wine bar where, with due ceremony and ritual, you can taste your way through some award-winning Slovenian wines. They do retail as well: buy a bottle of the their white Veliko Belo or red Veliko Rdeče, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinot Noir.

    Klub K4

    This evergreen club in the basement of the Student Organisation of the University of Ljubljana (Študentska Organizacija Univerze Ljubljani; ŠOU) features rave-electronic music Friday and Saturday, with other styles of music weeknights, and a popular gay and lesbian night on Sunday. It closes when university breaks up.

    Slovenska Kinoteka

    Shows archival art and classic films whereas its sister-cinema Kino Dvor (Court Cinema; 434 25 48; www.kinodvor.si, in Slovene; Kolodvorska ulica* 13) nearby shows more contemporary films. Screenings are usually at 18:00, 20:00 and 22:00 and cost around €4.

    A favourite with the hipster crowd, this small, smoky bar has mosaic tables, student art on the walls, soul and jazz on the stereo, and a giant water pipe on the menu for that long, lingering smoke. Cool but abit pretentious. There's a shady outdoor patio.

    Kavarna Pločnik

    With the distinctive name of 'Pavement', this roped-off café-bar on the southern side of Prešernov trg is one of the most popular places for a drink. Sit outside and watch the passing parade or listen to some live music (most nights).

    Established in 1955 as the first professional theatre for children and youth in Slovenia, this company has staged some highly acclaimed contemporary productions in the Festival Hall north of the train station.

    Just up from the Parliament building, Gajo is the city's premier venue for live jazz and attracts both local and international talent, usually midweek or on Friday at 20:30. Jam sessions are at 20:30 Monday.

    If you take your cuppa seriously come here; the appropriately named 'Teahouse' offers a wide range of green and black teas and fruit tisanes for around €3 a pot; it sells the leaves, too.
