I am travelling to Slovenia in September and plan to rent a car for a few days to tour around Bled then travel to Predjama castle and Skocjan cave before dropping the car in the city. There is a significant price difference between manual and automatic rental prices at most rental agencies. While I really enjoy and am comfortable with driving a standard in Canada with its relatively flat and wider roads, I am not sure if my skills would be a match for narrow winding roads with steep terrain and…
This summer I'm going to Eastern Europe with my girlfriend, traveling by car, sleeping in a tent. We are looking for nature: the "rough" spots & the "secret" places. Not the touristic stuff!
Who knows spots like that? Hidden beaches, remote campings, motorcross, cliff jumping, kayak, bareboat; any tip is welcome!
More specifically: anyone knows a good place to rent a small boat (no charter, just bareboat) and a buggy? Preferably not to pricy.
I'm currently planning a one week holiday in Slovenia in late August (leaving it pretty late I know!) and I was wondering whether or not to spend all the time in Slovenia or to split it between Slovenia and one of the coastal towns in Istria, Croatia. This is my rough idea for an itinerary.
21st August: Fly into Ljubljana. We'll land pretty late, so just head straight to the hotel.
22nd August: Full day in Llubljana.
23rd-24th August: Lake Bled
After this, we could either head to the small…
We are looking for the best suggestion of our first time + first hike in Slovenia. We are looking to do camping during hiking as much of possible.
Of course, we are looking at the Triglav National Park, it seems great! But, we have read that camping is restricted there? Anybody could confirm that? What are the other option for a few days hike? Going hut to hut?
Any suggestion here would be great! We have about 5-6 days in total, spending about 3 days on the Mountains and 3 days at the…
I'm travelling through Italy for a couple of weeks in late July before heading to Budapest where I'm meeting friends. I'd like to stop via Ljubljana, ideally going from Venice to Ljubljana and then from Ljubljana to Budapest. I appreciate these are both long journeys, especially the latter. Is it advisable to book the trains now or can I buy tickets at little price difference from both Venice and Ljubljana stations?
Firstly, the areas deserve much more time than a day trip so I'm coming back to explore more.
Lake Bled on a sunny day is nicer than any postcard or promo pic I've seen. It's synonymous with Slovenia together with Lake Bohinj and Mount Triglav. Today I'm seeing all three.
An easy day trip on a bus from Ljubljana. It's 6km to circumnavigate the lake and photo opportunities are numerous. However, the best views are from the hills Osojica and Ojstrica SW from the lake, trekking to…
Skocjan Caves were a new caving experience for me. It's all about following the impressive underground canyon. This is my second underground river experience in less than a year when I think about it. The one in Philippines (The Underground River in Palawan) was about boating the big river flowing through some grand halls whereas this one was more about the paths and crossings in what truly is a canyon, underground. Skocjan Caves have also some big halls with an impressive selection of…
Pohorje is 5km away from Maribor city centre; it's about hiking and enjoying nature in summer and skiing in winter. I hiked to the upper cable car station instead of taking the cable car up and down; would have loved to explore further if I stayed longer in Maribor. The forest is beautiful and so are the views of Maribor from the top.
Bus #6 (Vzpenjaca) goes from city centre to the bottom cable car station. Possible to walk there in 60 mins or so. Many ways up; the most obvious almost always…
Ptuj once occupied a strategic position on routes leading to Hungary and Austria. It's a beautiful town with reputation of being Slovenia's prettiest.
Possible to do Ptuj on a (half) day trip from Maribor. Buses are more frequent than trains and the ticket is bought onboard.
The above is an extract from my travel journals. Oct 2015
