    Tramontana

    Slovenia, which cannot (it must be said) boast a truly rich tradition of indigenous music often looks to its former co-tenants, and music of the republics of the late Yugoslavia is all the rage at two clubs: Tramontana, celebrated for its Balkan žur (Balkan party), and Katastrofa (431 51 55; www.petica.si, Celovška cesta 25; ;20:00-05:00 Fri & Sat) in the Tivoli Recreation Centre in Park Tivoli.

    Vinoteka Movia

    If you're more interested in the grape than the grain, hop over to this excellent wine bar where, with due ceremony and ritual, you can taste your way through some award-winning Slovenian wines. They do retail as well: buy a bottle of the their white Veliko Belo or red Veliko Rdeče, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinot Noir.

    This evergreen club in the basement of the Student Organisation of the University of Ljubljana (Študentska Organizacija Univerze Ljubljani; ŠOU) features rave-electronic music Friday and Saturday, with other styles of music weeknights, and a popular gay and lesbian night on Sunday. It closes when university breaks up.

    HIT Casino Park

    HIT Casino Perla and HIT Casino Park are the company store - nothing makes more money in Nova Gorica, and it's all from the Italians from across the border. Both casinos offer all the usual games - American and French roulette, blackjack, several types of poker, baccarat - and there are almost 1500 slot machines between them.

    Janez Trdina Cultural Centre

    the Janez Trdina Cultural Centre sponsors occasional theatrical and musical performances. Ask the staff about concerts held in the courtyard of the Provost's House during the Novo Mesto Summer Nights (Novomeški Poletni Večeri; tic@novomesto.si) festival in July and August.

    Slovenska Kinoteka

    Shows archival art and classic films whereas its sister-cinema Kino Dvor (Court Cinema; 434 25 48; www.kinodvor.si, in Slovene; Kolodvorska ulica* 13) nearby shows more contemporary films. Screenings are usually at 18:00, 20:00 and 22:00 and cost around €4.

    A favourite with the hipster crowd, this small, smoky bar has mosaic tables, student art on the walls, soul and jazz on the stereo, and a giant water pipe on the menu for that long, lingering smoke. Cool but abit pretentious. There's a shady outdoor patio.

    With the distinctive name of 'Pavement', this roped-off café-bar on the southern side of Prešernov trg is one of the most popular places for a drink. Sit outside and watch the passing parade or listen to some live music (most nights).

    This branch of the SNG in Ljubljana has one of the best reputations in the country, and its productions have received critical acclaim throughout Europe. The city's ballet and opera companies also perform here. Enter from Slomškov trg.

    This delightful café-bar just southwest from (and part of) the Vila Bled is perched atop a 30m concrete tower overlooking the lake and has a great period-piece socialist mosaic on the back wall of the front room.

    This enormous pub next to the Storžič cinema on Slovenski trg is popular with a very young crowd and is about the only place worth mentioning in Kranj. It's a dance club on Friday and Saturday nights.
