Bratislava: very nice but nothing to write home about
Blog: 501 Places - 3 January 2012
It is one of the most common traps for anyone writing a blog: I’ve been to a place so I must write about it. As if the act of merely being somewhere is a story worthy of telling to the world. Let’s face it; sometimes we visit a place and while it may be nice [...]Bratislava: very nice but nothing to write home about is a post from: 501 Places

Three Terrific Christmas Markets
Blog: Sophie's World - 20 November 2011
A highlight in Europe this time of year is the cheerful (sometimes even magical) Christmas markets. I adore browsing through the arts and crafts for sale, and trying some of the hearty seasonal street food. And then there’s mulled wine. Here are three of my favourite Christmas markets: Elegant and child-friendly Vienna I’m very fond [...]Three Terrific Christmas Markets is a post from Sophie's World

Beautiful Bratislava: Photo focus
Blog: The Art of Slow Travel - 3 October 2011
I want to conclude my series of posts about Bratislava, Slovakia, with a photo focus on all the beautiful little details in its compact old town which I got to photograph. As you can see, it is a photographer’s dream! It’s dotted with… …cute detail on shop fronts and shop windows … ornate doors [...]

Things to do in Bratislava
Blog: The Art of Slow Travel - 22 September 2011
I am in love with Bratislava. After 8 months of not visiting any new places, my trip there was reinvigorating. While researching information about it, I was surprised to find that the main source for bad reviews about the place was the fact that the ‘old town was very small’. For me, this is actually the reason [...]

St. Martin’s Cathedral, Bratislava: Pictures take you places
Blog: The Art of Slow Travel - 19 September 2011
Coming from a country with (I think) 365 churches, chapels and cathedrals in the space of 300 km squared, the prospect of visiting them while travelling is usually as appealing to me as jabbing a fork into my hand, but, St. Martin’s Cathedral in Bratislava, Slovakia, was different. A seriously old structure consecrated in 1452, [...]

Budapest, Vienna and Bratislava: cruising along the Danube
Blog: The Art of Slow Travel - 15 September 2011
I find it more than a little funny that now that I’m leaving Europe I should be filled with an almost uncontrollable desire to explore it further, a feeling which verges on regretting not having seen (though admittedly I couldn’t help it) more of this rich and diverse continent. There are some places I didn’t [...]

Bratislava: Portrait of a City
Blog: The Art of Slow Travel - 12 September 2011
There are so corners of the world which I’d probably not be that motivated to visit unless something made me do so. This was the case with Bratislava, Slovakia. It’s not that I thought it wasn’t worth it, but I just didn’t know anything about it. All I knew was that Bratislava was the setting [...]

The Other Europe
Blog: A Traveler's Library - 1 August 2011
Destination: Eastern Europe Book: (2004, newly out in paperback) by Andrzej Stasiuk So few of the place names in On the Road to Babadag were familiar, that I began to wonder if I had ever left the farm. Actually, Andrzej Stasiuk, a Pole, wrote this for a Polish audience, who might have more of a clue than [...]This content is a post from: A Traveler's Library To comment on this post or search for related information, click on the link to A Traveler's Library. How Not To Enjoy World Travel – Part 2
Blog: Vagobond.com - 24 September 2010
Don't read anything about the country of place you are going to. That way you won't understand the culture, the traditions, the history, the climate, or anything else. You will be able to have a completely one dimensional experience.

How Not To Enjoy World Travel – Part 1
Blog: Vagobond.com - 16 September 2010
There has been a lot written about how to enjoy world travel or how to increase the ways that world travel can fulfill you. What I haven't seen is a lot about how to have a miserable time when you are on the road.

Bratislava, Slovakia and the Giant Chair
Blog: Abandon the Cube - 28 August 2010
We arrived in Bratislava that evening after leaving Vienna. We heard it would be cheaper in Slovakia than Austria, but a quick consultation with Hostel World proved otherwise. We did manage to discover that there was a large camp ground near the city. We asked for directions and followed them….almost.

Lady in Slovakia
Blog: A Lady in London - 25 August 2010
If you drive from Bratislava to the High Tatras, make sure to have your camera ready. The scenic road runs alongside green farmland, picture-pretty church spires, and bucolic rivers. The best stretches even go by castles. Lots of castles. My friends and I drove north through Slovakia in a caravan of two identical red rental [...]

Lady in Bratislava
Blog: A Lady in London - 24 August 2010
Bratislava surprised me. When I studied in Prague years ago my professors told me and my fellow classmates that we should all go hiking in Slovakia, but that we should skip its capital city. Several students ignored their advice and did the exact opposite. They came back with tales of a small city that paled [...]

Day 161: Trainhopping
Blog: Diaries of a Vagabonding Couple - 22 July 2010
Sweet love - tasting Tokaji aszu, a dessert wine famous in Hungary Tokaj wasn't quite a straightforward destination to reach from Levoča, Slovakia. We decided to stop by this wine producing region famous in Hungary for it's sweet dessert wines rather than messing about with Bratislava. It took 12.5 hours and 3 changes to bridge the mere 250km distance. It was only yesterday that we left Levoča

Day 159: Castle Hike
Blog: Diaries of a Vagabonding Couple - 21 July 2010
Spissky Castle rising majestically behind town What a long day! Got up for an early start to leave Zdiar, got caught in pouring rain walking to the bus stop, got stuck 2.5 hrs at another bus station (Poprad) because it was Sunday (infrequent bus connections), got lost in the old town of Levoča upon arrival, bumped into Kit & Stevy again(!) who showed us to their privat, and ended our afternoon

Day 158: Chillin' in the mountains
Blog: Diaries of a Vagabonding Couple - 19 July 2010
Mountains at our doorstep Found it difficult to peel away from Zdiar, Slovakia. Rolling green hills and rocky mountains right at our doorstep, a sleepy village with hardly any travelers, a comfortable privat (private B&B type accomodation) with a nice little garden, and best of all - cooler temperatures! The garden where we chilled & bbq'd The last 2 nights here were animated with good

Side Trip to Bratislava – Where?
Blog: Ron in Rome - 18 January 2010
After a very hectic Christmas Holiday Season in Rome we decided to explore new vistas… and so we booked flights on Wizz Air to Bratislava. We’d never been to Slovakia before – actually never heard of the country. The opportunity to see a new country, and be within one hour of Vienna by train, was [...]
